WHO NEEDS AN IGNITION INTERLOCK DEVICE?

When you get a DUI in Idaho, you will need to have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle in order to regain driving privileges.

All 50 states including Idaho have ignition interlock device (or IID) requirements in effect as part of the consequences of a DUI or DWI violation. The purpose of these devices is to prevent an impaired drivers from being able to operate their motor vehicle if their blood alcohol volume (or BAC) is above a certain legal limit.

In order to start and continue to operate the vehicle, you must initially or intermittently blow into the device, until all requirements have been satisfied with the court.

WHAT IS AN IGNITION INTERLOCK DEVICE, AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

An IID is a fairly sophisticated piece of equipment that interfaces with your vehicle to help you remain compliant with the terms of your sentencing/parole/probation. If the IID detects a BAC above a certain threshold, it will interfere with your ignition, and other systems of your vehicle as well. Depending on the requirements and the way the device is calibrated and equipped, it will record (and report) the following information, and more:

  • Date/time of startup test
  • Location of the startup test (if the device is GPS equipped)
  • Whether you passed or failed the test
  • Date and time of rolling retests
  • Location of rolling retest
  • Distance you travel
  • Any skipped rolling retests
  • Any passed or failed rolling retests
  • Any attempts to keep driving after a failed rolling retest
  • Picture each time you take a test (if camera-equipped)
  • Attempts to get someone else to take the test for you
  • Any attempts to tamper with the device
  • Attempts to remove the device
  • Failed to make a scheduled service visit

HOW DO YOU GET THE IGNITION INTERLOCK DEVICE INSTALLED OR SERVICED?

Your ignition interlock device can also communicate other information, or none at all if it’s voluntary, but all IID’s require professional installation from a reputable and recognized dealer.

If your device is malfunctioning or is damaged it can impact your readings and impair your ability to fulfill your legal requirements (or get to work, school, and more).

Some mechanics may feel apprehensive about working on a vehicle that has an IID installed, and you yourself may feel apprehensive about taking your vehicle just anywhere to have even routine maintenance performed.

Being required to have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on your vehicle is stressful enough, without having to worry about the confidentiality and competency of those who may be working on or around the device.
